The Texas Rangers think that a killer killing men for a large rancher near the little town of Sundown must be Hyde. Several dead men have Hyde’s stamp—namely, that they’ve been shot in the back from long-range by a high-powered rifle. It’s widely known that the Jackal kills from long range with a large-caliber Sharps hybrid.
Complicating matters is that nobody seems to know what the Jackal looks like. No one has gotten that close and lived to tell about him. He rides like a...well, like a jackal haunting the range!
On his train journey down to Texas, Haskell meets an attractive and saucy young Pinkerton detective, Arliss Posey. A one-night-stand turns into a shared assignment. As the bodies pile up on the west Texas desert, and more jackals rear their ugly heads in Sundown, Haskell finds himself rethinking not only who the Jack Hyde might be riding for, and why he’s killing, but also just who he really is...
In the mean time, Bear must also negotiate the bountiful wiles and charming mystery of his Pinkerton partner while riding like hell to keep the Jackal from turning him toe-down!

For years now, I have enjoyed Mr. Brandvold's many westerns/characters. This one, however, left me disappointed in the direction he is taking. All this novel seemed to be was one romp after another in the hay, grass, rocks--you name it--and that is not my cup of tea for westerns. I kept thinking I was reading another "Longarm" novel--and I hated those after just one try. I will continue buying Mr. Brandvold's novels but not another Bear Haskell western--if that is what you want to call it.Product details

Pete Brandvold writes in a visceral style that grabs you by the throat and doesn't let go until the final page. He is the rightful heir to Louis L'Amour, only different.
I love this new series By Mean Pete,i was disappointed when the big three were shut down.Now with this series in the same vein as Longarm it is an ADULT western so be forewarned. Bear Haskell is the man.
Two things in life that never disappoint me a Peter Brandvold western and a glass of Gen 7's Noir de Noir wine (The Black Velvet of my misspent youth.
The Jackals of Sundown is an outstanding book. No matter the locale, you feel you are THERE, that you are Bear Haskell's shadow as he strides through a room or confronts an adversary.
I'm glad I bought this to read with my morning coffee, because the opening scene -- the gut-wrenching image -- of being buried alive would not be a good way to drift off to sleep. The idea of being confined in a box, of sensing the nails being pounded into the pine; the absolute humiliation of what is being done to you; and then to end up finding out your coffin is going to be tossed into a river... That feeling was all too real.
It is a rip-roaring ride from there. Don't want to give any spoilers, but Bear more than has his hands full, and not just of beautiful women. The story just sweeps you along, taking unexpected twists and turns before reaching a great conclusion..

The second was even better than the first. Miss Louisa is my dream girl, but Miss Arliss is going to be some pretty stiff competition. Bear Haskell is going to be one of my favorite characters.
Very interesting read!Lots of twists and turns to keep you interest in what will happen next! I really enjoy Mr. Brandvold writing style!
Second book just completed. Very good read and I do recommend. Please note the proofreaders keep messing up; namely Bear lost his Schofield before he is tossed into the Arkansas River, but has it once he is recused on the banks by Scuffy.
